Interlock Blocking for a Robotic Stacking Cell

The customer is a global leader in contact lenses. As part of the production process, robots pick and stack boxes containing contact lenses before they are sent off for packaging.

The Challenge

The guard that allows access to the area where the robot operates features a sensor that indicates whether it is open or closed. In addition, when the guard is open the robot stops.

However, initially there was no system in place to prevent the guard from closing while personnel were inside the cell, exposing them to the risk of an unexpected start-up.

While the machine was originally built to meet regulations in its initial market, the company later expanded to new countries with different safety requirements. As a result, modifications were necessary. However, upgrading the entire machine would have required a significant investment.

The Solution

Osbourn

Fortress recommended the installation of interlock blocking devices (IBL) from the Osbourn range. These devices feature a personnel key and a guard blocking plate to prevent a guard from closing while personnel are inside the safeguarded space.

This solution not only allowed the customer to meet the requirements set by local regulations, but was also cost-effective, with considerable monetary savings compared to a machine upgrade. Five IBL units were installed at this specific site, but the customer showed interest in adopting this solution at other sites globally.
