Celebrating Women in Engineering Day at Fortress Safety

Female engineer working on industrial machinery in a manufacturing environment

At Fortress Safety, we’re proud to join the wider Halma group in recognising International Women in Engineering Day by celebrating the talented women engineers driving innovation across our teams.

This year, we’re especially delighted to shine a light on two of our own: Rong Shen and Warinda Phutthanukun, both of whom were featured in Halma’s special spotlight on engineers working across the Safety Sector.

Rong Shen - Software Engineer

Rong joined Fortress in 2022 as a software engineer, supporting the development and maintenance of our FRANK product range. From writing code and refining internal processes to collaborating across departments, Rong’s day-to-day work reflects the dynamic nature of engineering at Fortress.

Her curiosity about computers started early – as young as four years old – and led her from China to the UK, where she graduated in Computer Science from the University of Warwick. Now based in Wolverhampton, Rong brings not only technical expertise but a passion for inclusive leadership, having recently completed a management course as she prepares for the next step in her career.

Rong is a strong advocate for gender representation in STEM and encourages young girls to explore the exciting possibilities within engineering.

Warinda Phutthanukun – Manufacturing Test Engineer

Warinda plays a key role in our small but mighty test engineering team at Fortress. From building and maintaining testing systems to collaborating with engineers across the business, her work ensures our safety products perform exactly as they should.

With academic qualifications in Electronics and Wireless Communications from Thailand and the UK, and hands-on experience from Thai Airlines and the electronics industry, Warinda brings a global perspective to her role. Her passion for engineering was sparked by her love for maths and physics – and by recognising how small components can create powerful changes.

Though her family initially expected her to become a teacher, Warinda’s decision to follow her own path into engineering has been a source of pride for both her and her family. Her story is a brilliant reminder to pursue what inspires you, even if it’s outside expectations.
