About the application

Automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) often span across many aisles, have multiple access points, and are likely to have cranes to retrieve and store products. In some regions, such systems need to conform with EN528, a safety standard for rail dependent storage and retrieval equipment, which includes a range of requirements with respect to self-closing guards, mode selection and key dependency.

This example discusses a warehouse facility of a car manufacturer used to store cylinder engines.

The challenge

The system needs to include a key for external mode selection between automatic and manual modes; the guard needs to close after personnel enter; to operate the crane from within the aisle, the on-board control station needs to be in manual mode. Moreover, in this specific case, the customer also wants protection for additional personnel entering the area, preventing unexpected start-up of the machine.

The solution

On the self-closing guard there is an amGardpro interlock with a proNet module that communicates over PROFINET. The unit has a key switch for external mode selection and a pod with controls. Additional personnel entering the aisle can apply a personal padlock on the lock dustcover.

Inside the aisle, an internal mode selection switch at the on-board control station enables the manual control of the crane. When the work is completed, the operator returns the mode selection switch to automatic mode, removes the key, and exits the aisle. The interlock has also an escape release function to allow egress.

Operations cannot restart until all personnel remove their padlocks and the key is returned. By returning the key to the external mode selection switch, automatic mode can be restored, alongside any other necessary measures to reset and start the machine.

Why amGardpro?

Fortress devices may be used as part of a wider system to meet the requirements of EN 528. In addition, amGardpro enables:

· Easy integration within the existing network thanks to the proNet module

· Prevention of unexpected start-up

· Interlock blocking – the padlockable dustcover provides protection when additional personnel need to enter the area.

· Immediate egress in case personnel becomes trapped thanks to the escape release.
