Preventing Unexpected Start-up with Interlock Blocking
Heineken needed to protect personnel against unexpected start-up at a Johannesburg plant (South Africa). Although interlocks were installed on machine guards, there was no system in place to prevent personnel from being exposed to the risk of unexpected start-up. To address this issue, Heineken chose interlock blocking (IBL) solutions from Fortress Safety’s Osbourn range.
IBL devices are equipped with a personnel key and a guard blocking plate. When the key is present, the plate prevents opening of the guard. Rotation and removal of the key rotates the plate and allows opening of the guard when the hazards are in the safe state, permitting opening of the interlock. At the same time, an interlock blocking plate is driven by the rotation, preventing the guard and interlock from closing. The personnel key is kept by the operator until the end of tasks, preventing reset while inside the safeguarded space.
IBL devices are versatile mechanical solutions that work with existing interlocks and machines without the need for wiring or programming, resulting in considerable monetary savings compared to a full machine upgrade. This flexibility was crucial for easy integration into Heineken’s existing systems. A total of 126 IBL units were installed on multiple lines across the site, including bottling and palletizing areas, on both sliding and hinged guards, providing an additional level of protection to employees whilst ensuring easy integration in a cost-effective manner.
