Key Codes
Fortress keys have over 200,000 different ‘cut’ combinations. Each different key combination is allocated with an engraving (code) to match it’s compatible lock. The engraving can be up to a maximum of 30 characters (3 lines of 10 characters). The Engraving (code) features on the front of keys, locks, and lock protectors.

All codes are engraved in capitals only. When supplying the engraving a backslash (/) indicates that the following details are to be carried over to the next line (*Unless requested otherwise, i.e. “E/SW” to be engraved on one line only). i.e. MACHINE A/AREA B/WELDING would be engraved as:
1st line: MACHINE A
2nd line: AREA B
3rd line: WELDING
Key Differs
The Key Number (differ) consist of 7 numbers and are generated and recorded by Fortress. Key numbers are allocated to the engraving supplied once an order is placed. Fortress records engravings (code) and key numbers (differ) in accordance with ISO/TS 19837: 2018 which states that for all trapped key systems, ‘there shall be means to prevent unintentional duplication of key codes… the essential requirement [of trapped key systems] is that codes are not unintentionally duplicated’.

What is a Master Key?
Standard Differs are assigned to each ‘lock’ and the compatible ‘key’ which will operate it.
Standard differs can be assigned common to multiple locks as shown in Scenario A or can be uniquely assigned to each individual lock within a sequenced system. Locks can only be operated by the key which shares the Standard Differ to the given lock.
Master Differs can be assigned to any lock within any given lock operated system.
MLK-SUGM – Master Differ Key
ISO/TS 19837 describes a Master Key as a ‘Key which can open multiple locks of different coding’. It is advised that all master keys are kept under the control of management and shall be taken account of in the risk assessment. IMPORTANT: Master keys can pose a risk of bypassing the procedural steps of a trapped key sequence.
The Master Key is able to operate any lock which has been assigned with the master differ. Thus, each ‘Master’ lock will have both a ‘Standard Differ’ and a ‘Master Differ’ to accept Keys for standard operation and the overall Master key.
